The important common thread in all of the studies by the Laureates is that differences in information can cause the markets to collapse. People know when they don't have as much information, such as when buying a used car, and so avoid the transaction (or demand a risk premium) if they know they are at the mercy of someone with "inside" information. It actually works to the disadvantage of the insider. Some of the work involves ways to indirectly disclose the information so as to reassure the market.
