Ten,<<<Would you prefer that I told you, an INTC shareholder, about every confidential project going on inside Intel? Of course not, because the competition could use such information to get a leg up on Intel.>>>
One of the primary reasons why we are able to prevail over communism is that we are an open society.
Communism on the other hand was a closed society. Everything was a big secret. The biggest secret was that nothing was working and they had to use more repressive means to keep more secrets.
In the same way, ideally, there should be no insider information. Everything should be open. You publish your road map to let everyone in your own company know where you want to go and to let them get on board and pull in the same direction.
If you were a big powerful company with a lot of talent and tremendous resources, you could afford to do this. The competition just wouldn't be able to keep up.
But, if you were a small (and small minded) company, you would keep a lot of secrets. You would keep secrets from your investors, allies, and co-workers. The more secrets you keep, the more you could double cross your friends and collegues.
It's a trade off.
