Okay. You got me. I need to rant about this.

Why is it that people are worried about offending
or making children feel uncomfortable about the
pledge of allegiance? Or, wowie, can't hear the words
of the Star Spangled Banner because they're too militaristic? Parents are worried about this stuff?

Get out.

Children are exposed to violence every time they turn
on the television and in virtually all movies marketed
to them for which the parents give permission to attend.
Should Channel 4 start blacking out its coverage of
violence and military action? Give me a break. The
lyrics are mild and nothing compared to the 6 o'clock
news. Puhleeze!

This is the U.S.A.
Children going to school here are in the U.S.A.
Most are even citizens of the U.S.A.
They are entitled to recite the pledge.
They should be encouraged to recite the pledge.
If a child is not a citizen or if he feels uncomfortable about the pledge, then he has choices:

1. Go to school/live in a country where he can be
comfortable reciting a pledge of allegiance;

2.Don't recite the words even if his/her classmates do.
What a concept. Why be uncomfortable? If you're
not a citizen and have no ties to the country, keep your mouth shut. Too bad if the kid next to you pledges. It's never too early to learn the courage of your convictions
and to stand up for your own beliefs.

The exercise of many rights and freedoms in this country
offends others who also have rights and freedoms.
This doesn't mean that people have to refrain from
exercising their rights just to protect the sensibilities
of others.

It is an outrage to me that patriotic speech, like the
pledge of allegiance or the words to our national anthem,
are being censored by the very same kind of people who would
defend to their dying day the right of the Larry Flynts
of the world to publish pornography.

It's time for a wake up call is all that I can say.
