Cable modem penetration is slowing and the biggest ISP, Excite@Home, is busted.

It appears to me that you are giving little, if any, credence to the efforts of companies like Adelphia, which is my cable supplier of TV and broadband or Cox; two companies who supply TV and high speed cable access in this part of Virginia.

Granted, this is a small dot on the world of broadband and currently Cox is supplying high speed access through their tie-in with E@H. However, they have stated they will continue supplying access on their own after their deal with E@H ends. They are large enough financially I believe, and will be able to supply this on their own. Only time will tell.

Aren't there enough cable companies across America to continue the roll out of broadband, even faster than at its present slow rate?

Another nearby independent cable company with a subscriber base of, I'm guessing, less than 10,000 has been offering high speed broadband on its own for some time. When my former small independent ISP chose to go DSL in August, I chose to switch to Adelphia. I'm very happy with it and everyone I've talked to locally is tickled to death with the high speed access.
