I also agree that being bilingual has benefits, but the most important language concern in the US is IMO that everyone learn to speak, read, and write English.

You're not giving me much to disagree with either. I do think, though, that kids learning Spanish would not be at the expense of English but that the two would compliment each other. Learning a new language requires an attention to grammar and sentence structure that may be dismissed by kids as unnecessary or uninteresting in their native language. I also think you're underestimating the number of fields and places where Spanish will be important in, say, thirty years when today's kids will be concerned about job skills.
