Well, by Sharon traveling to the mount, he sent a powerful signal to those who might have supported Netanyahu instead... "Vote for me"...

But you're right... from what I understood, this was not a surprise visit, and it seems that Arafat took this opportunity to pull a little power play of his own.

That's what's so tragic when there are extremists on one side and moderates on the other... The extremists will always force the other side to lose their moderation and become extreme themselves.

And this is just what Arafat accomplished by not negotiating in good faith with Peres and Barak.

So now there are extremists on both sides, and someone's going to have to knock both their heads together (especially Arafat's) and see some reason..
