Wal-Mart Manager Awarded After Strip Search
37 Black Employees Were Searched For Missing Money

POSTED: 8:54 a.m. EDT October 12, 2001

CLEVELAND - A Wal-Mart manager who says that he was fired because he is white has received a $500,000 U.S. District Court jury award.
Robert Serger, 37, says that he became a scapegoat after 37 black employees were searched when $1,000 turned up missing at a Cleveland Heights store in 1999.

Serger says that he was fired because Wal-Mart feared a public-relations disaster.

Wal-Mart attorney Richard Hubbard says that he would discuss with company officials whether to appeal Thursday's verdict.

Serger says that he told the assistant manager to check employees' packages for the money as they left the store.

Employees were later searched in bathrooms. Serger says that he never told anyone to search them.
