One wonders how Kipling and others of his day fit British management of the opium trade into this framework of altruism. I suppose that they simply pretended it wasn't happening, and that the vast fortunes of the Victorian aristocracy were the result of British virtue and divine providence. The human capacity for self-deception is very nearly unlimited. This has not changed since Kipling's day.
