Some subscriber numbers....the ITU has classified 1xrtt as 3G, though some regard it as 2.5G.

SK Telecom launched what was basically a trial 1x service last October (though they called it commercial). At the time there goal was to have 1m subscriber by the end of '01. The commercial version of this service was probably launched sometime in March....the three competing carriers launched their 1x services in May.

SK Telecom now has 1.33m 1x subscribers and the competing services probably have around 350,000(end of September). The year end number total could be around 4m total 1x subscribers. This would represent around 14% penetration of the total subscriber base. The reported access speeds are consistently in the 60-80Kbps range.

As I have said before....this isnt broadband. However, it is a good first step for mobile wireless technology. PCS and Verizon have comitted to a 1x launch by the end of this year....however it wouldnt surprise me to see this slip into the first quarter of next year. PCS believes that they will have nationwide coverage by the end of the first half of next year.
