I don't know what the feelings were about opium trading at the time... certainly cocaine was legal in the UK, and I believe opium needed at most a doctor's prescription. So possibly it was seen as no worse than (say) profiting from tobacco trading today, if that... lucrative if not ethically perfect? Even the slave trade used to be perfectly reputable, after all.
