What was the point of the article, in your opinion?

The point of the article was to announce/predict this war as a paradigm shift for gays in the military.

He supports his premise with a report of a change already made in the policy on the dismissal of gays already in the military and goes on to describe some other current events that he thinks will contribute to that change being continued after the current crisis has passed.
