If, in fact, the military is reconsidering its policy towards gays, that's important. I'm sure you recall what a hot issue it was early in the Clinton administration.

There are a lot of people who think that gays aren't qualified to serve. In that context, the hero priest and the hero rugger are very relevant because they help disabuse the military and the public of their bigotry. Oddly their relevance in that context demonstrates that sexual orientation isn't relevant for anything other than choice of partners.
