the details I provided on Gacy probably are not exactly correct, but the substance is, and that is the whole point.

I can remember back to the bad old days before the civil rights movement when newscasters regularly reported that John Smith, a black plumber from Brooklyn, had bludgeoned his wife or had robbed a bank. I recall wondering if the guy's wife was white or the bank the Bank of Rhodesia. In those circumstances, his race might be relevant. Otherwise, the mention of it was gratuitous at best. I also remember when they stopped identifying race when it wasn't relevant.

The point of the article we were discussion was about gays in the military. Two examples of now-famous heroes who happened to be gay are very relevant.
