A coarse effort at valuation has the potential to eliminate some - but not all - mistakes that might slip through when making no attempt at valuation.

Which includes the question of whether or not one would have avoided the error through other aspects of the evaluation. At one time I would say that there was certainly a risk, e.g., buying high in the bubble, but I wouldn't be surprised if many of us would be scared off by other aspects now, even without a formal valuation.

What one needs is a database of examples so that we have a better idea of what is excludable by valuation that otherwise would seem investment worthy.
