re If the Russians can get the US to do a lot of their dirty work in Central Asia then so much the better for them.

The news links I have provided earlier (and I agree you can only put a little faith in the press) show that Russia has done it's bit of the "dirty work". Putin, I believe, is actively requesting help on this matter. In plain open terms.

It's my hope that the the USA and partners are in open frank discussion on that point. Like read this comment in the first link..

The covert Russian invasion of Afghanistan would be exposed, the Russian public would be furious, the elite would blame the treacherous Americans, and the new closeness between Moscow and the West might end in acute acrimony.
