I don't think u have a very good handle on what the global consumption of energy is doing. I would anticipate in the next 20 years significant changes in the way we expend energy. Perhaps you inferred a double meaning to my analogy. I meant only that there will be significant changes much the way Europe has changed in it's efficiency, not that the two systems are directly comparable.

Global energy consumption from fossil fuels since the 1960's has grown EXPONENTIALLY. Even though efficiency has drastically increased, the growth of developing nations will be at the expense of huge amounts of limited natural resources.

Furthermore as our freeways and parking lots become more congested, lifestyle will change accordingly. Mass Transit systems will be way more efficient and quicker to get you to your destination even though this is presently not the case. I can tell you, as one person who is firmly entrenched in listening to my drivetime radio and creeping along in traffic, that if i could find a way to make my commute as comfortable, as cheap, and as time efficient as my drive, i'd do it in a second.

I'm not suggesting you'll give up ur SUV, but what you view as a smart choice of automobiles will likely change in the comming years with respect to horsepower, fuel efficiency, weight, and carrying capacity and safety.
