Fusion. Its a reality, not economical right now. The Navy has a few development fusion reactors itself, along with the international fusion research projects. The cost is, as I understand it, in producing the containment field.

20 years and 1 trillion? Should do the trick in superconduction and magnetic field generation and materials research. That would be a damn cheap investment, considering the payoffs.

Clean, safe, widespread fusion power would free the US from Arab oil practically overnight. The US is the world's largest producer of oil and natural gas, we just eat more than we produce. Domestic production, in conjunction with fusion and fission nuclear power, as well as hydro and other domestic sources, could make us energy self-sufficient.
