Douglas and all, I've been mentioning "The Clash of Civilisations"[UK spelling] on this thread, the old thread and some years before that on the gold forums. For those who never got a chance to read the book, the original essay that inspired it is in todays Sunday Times in the Essay section:
sunday-times.co.uk
The essay will function as a brief summation of the book for those without the time or inclination to read it.
I do not necessarily agree with all the authors conclusions, but in general have considered the book (and this excellent essay) a prescient analytical work for some years. While it is now becoming somewhat popular, I believe I was one of the first, if not the first, to mention it on SI.
I have also finished, for the purposes of market analysis, my study of Islam and Arab culture. Most of my conclusions I prefer to keep private. But as pertains to the markets, I believe it is time we turn our technology toward alternate enegy, whether by fuel cell or oil shale or oil sands, nuclear power or renewable, or even all of the above.
It is madness to have our economy captive to foreign energy sources.
IMHO, the time of cheap energy from global sources will be over within the decade, perhaps much sooner, the turning point at least has now occured.
I've going to a match today, so after this, I'm outta here till tonight.
Best
