hussein, as a secularist, would normally be regarded as an infidel by bin laden, so, it's a very curious question as to the real relationship between al qaeda and hussein.

Hussein is a Sunni somewhere along the lines; perhaps that smooths the way for cooperation. Just the same, bin Laden took the support of the US when it suited his needs, so why not Hussein? Probably as simple as that.

Finally and more ominously, it seems at least possible if not likely that Iraq is the most unstable state of all in the region; a Taleban / bin Laden overthrowing of Hussein might be a big prize for them. Perhaps having the US take Hussein out is part of their plan...
