I'd say that the same function exists now on the Internet except that it is now to fit the TIME available.

I'd never thought of it that way. That makes a lot of sense. Would that every writer who goes on and on followed that approach.

I have a fondness for InfoMapping, a proprietary method I learned a dozen years ago, because it suits my right brain. It's organized big time plus the methodology has rules for conveying different classes of information. For example, a process uses declarative sentences and a procedure uses imperative sentences. It's obvious once you think about it, but most writers never think about it. The advantage of an approach like InfoMapping on the Internet is that readers can easily identify just what section is of interest by the labels. And if the reader wants to take in the whole subject, he'll find it's much shorter and clearer. End of commercial. I think I've posted about this before. I have no interest in this company. It's just that learning the methodology made a real difference in my worklife.
