I would agree that a lot of people call that "second-hand emotion" love. Lust, sex and love all get tangled up. There are many kinds of love. I can't see how a breathless infatuation could be the only "good" kind. In fact, when people are in that ecstatic state, they frequently make really poor choices. As animals, I'm not sure we actually have that much to say about it. There is a whole pheromone 'dialog' that goes on that we just aren't privy to in our higher brain.
