You are quite correct in that it is very difficult to get an accurate read on public opinion through the news media. Besides the fact that people who are relaxed in their attitude get NO headlines, there is the ratings issue which you have already pointed out. That's why it is especially important to reserve one's opinions until a broad understanding based on facts has been acquired.

"Ethnic hatred is ugly, no matter how you slice it. Being the victim of a group that practices it is no excuse for repeating the behavior when you live in a society with higher standards." Agreed!

I would only add that it is very important in war to know who the enemy is. Before September 11th the enemy was distant radical extremists. After September 11th we learned that 19 seemingly normal young men of Islam were in fact co-conspirators in the worst mass murder plot ever perpetrated on our soil. Just as no one can make the blanket assumption that all Muslims are responsible for those deaths, those responsible for this nations security cannot make the blanket assumption that the rest of the Muslims in this country are not a threat.

For reasons of national security as well as public safety, they have to take a good hard look at the degree of penetration the bin Laudin ideology has made into the Nation of Islam, both on this and foreign soils. They (we) cannot simply assume that the enemy is a mere handfull of well trained, hijacked orphans from Afghanistan.

This is an undeclared covert war placed on our doorstep from an ill-defined and DANGEROUS enemy. The broader assumption in Washington has to err on the side of greater national security. It is for that reason our government is taking military action against the Taliban. It is for that reason our military leaders, including President Bush, will not say at this point whether there will be further action against other countries after Afghanistan is secure. It is for that reason, I keep raising the issue of the silence of Muslims not aligned with bin Laudin. They need to be vocal in their assertion that bin Laudin does not speak for them, even if they fear being branded as non-believers by the extreme factions within the Nation of Islam.

I sincerely hope your position that "the largest Muslim population in the world is less enthusiastic about Bin Laden and his cause than they were about other Islamic issues prior to the attacks" is relevant to more than just Indonesia. While "less enthusiastic" is a more muted expression that I would hope for, I'll take it to mean that they are not likely to align themselves with this hate monger.

Your use of the term "less enthusiastic" seems to reflect your own realization that the U.S. has been doing a poor job of getting our message across. Let's both hope that more communication is forthcoming from both the U.S. government and the many clerics around the world who speak for their Islamic brethren.
