Totally agreed on the civilian casualties issue. As for the other coverage, moderates make poor interviews. Ever seen a reporter rushing around yelling,"Find me someone with a reasonable opinion for a sound bite!"

Nope.

Controversy sells (violence is better - if it bleeds, it leads, that's the editorial philosophy). So moderates can issue press releases and hold public meetings and maybe be interviewed on CNN among the 657 other guests that day, but you won't hear their message repeated in the headlines. Anti-Americanism is much more eye-catching (and ear-catching).

Renting a mob is cheap - often you don't even have to pay, just gather a bunch of bored, pissed off locals with nothing else to do and start a riot. Good fun for all.

When the Bosnian Serbs had a little riot outside our office in Banja Luka (Bosnian Serb capital) they paid $25 apiece to the kids in the crowd. They got some TV coverage and one of our local guards had his arm broken. Pretty effective for maybe $1000 up front for the thugs.

The silent majority in many countries stays that way because speaking out often gets you whacked over the head by the police or murdered on your doorstep by local extremists.
