Thanks, VFD. We tend to forget that the cost structure realignment also means that real people lose jobs.

That post, however, contains a curious comment about obsolescence that also happens to be a standard line in the marketing briefing materials of EMC's rivals. It also contains an overwrought view of commodification, which is perhaps understandable but which nonetheless ignores the true interchangeability of goods according to market segmentation and the strategic pricing strategies that IBM and Hitachi have adopted during the last 2 years to compete against EMC.

When I have the time I'll try to elaborate some more.
