We had a wonderful time at USC. What an incredible place.
But the nicest thing (besides seeing our son, who looked very Californian in sandals and sunglasses) was something that happened during Lunch in the Park on Friday. There were maybe three or four hundred parents eating boxlunches under the trees, during which a pep rally was held for the game on Sat.. Into the park marches the band, the Trojans, all red and gold with capes and big gold Trojan helmets with tall scarlet plumes and they are SOOOOO good. Lots of loud drums and cheerleaders dancing and shouting- very exciting. EVeryone is yelling FIGHT ON, which is the USC trademark yell. (All the letters we get from the school end with "Fight On!" instead of Very Truly Yours.)

And then suddenly there is a hush and the band begins to play, so softly and sweetly, "America the Beautiful".

400 people put down their roast beef sandwiches and rise, all together, their hands on their hearts.
Words fail me.
