Well it's either that (total conquest) or Jews and Arabs in radio tracking ankle bracelets.

Frankly between the official political lies and the religious rhetoric it look like no clear definable solution short of nuclear Armageddon.

Now I used to think, it's a good thing it's guys like me who had their finger on the nuclear trigger instead of dangerous dweebs like rarebird. But with the new world order I suddenly find that it's irrelevant. It may be that fundamentalists on both sides are really what is driving this dangerous polarization. Of course our enemies have to clearly define themselves as irreducibly opposed to us, and dangerous enough to justify total war, something that they have strived to hide for along time, semi successfully without gaining any real trust. But if things continue to drive us apart and trust is never there, then I would say it is inevitable. Total war between east and west will engulf the world. There is no middle ground between inflexible domains.

Once before we saw this in man's history. The problem was soluble. But there is no stand off today. No lines drawn in the sand mutually between equally dangerous forces. Only vague unease about the enemies dastardliness and intractibility. This is worse than the cold war. And more dangerous in that it makes a total war solution, while seemingly hard to justify and mobilize for, only ponderable because at the present time, and for not too many more years, it is winnable.
