QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies Announces On-Time Shipment of

World's First End-to-End Wireless Megabit Data Rate Chipset Solutions to Support Commercial Deployment of CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Worldwide

Business Editors and High-Tech Writers

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 15, 2001--

MSM5500 and CSM5500 Chipsets, System Software and SURF

Development Platform Optimized for High-Speed Wireless

Data with Peak Rates of 2.4 Mbps

QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced worldwide production shipment of the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) MSM5500(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) and CSM5500(TM) Cell Site Modem (CSM(TM)) chipsets and system software solutions for third-generation (3G) handsets and infrastructure, as well as the accompanying Subscriber Unit Reference (SURF(TM)) development platform. The MSM5500 and CSM5500 solutions support the industry-adopted CDMA2000 1X Evolution Data-Optimized (1xEV-DO) standard, designed for high-speed wireless data, which uses a spectrally efficient 1.25 Megahertz (MHz) channel to provide a peak data rate of 2.4 Megabits per second (Mbps) on the forward link.

"With the on-time production shipping of the MSM5500 and CSM5500 solutions, QCT is enabling the transmission of Megabit-per-second wireless data coupled with advanced features such as gpsOne and Bluetooth in the most cost-efficient manner," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "These solutions will help place manufacturers and operators on the fast track in developing and deploying next-generation, high-speed data services that will provide consumers with an experience similar to the wired Internet."

The 3G CDMA2000 1xEV-DO standard provides the lowest cost-per-bit of any wireless technology -- including Wideband CDMA (WCDMA) and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS), as supported in QUALCOMM's white paper, "The Economics of Wireless Mobile Data," (March 2001). The paper analyzes the cost to deliver wireless data over various 2.5G and 3G technologies, and concludes that the network cost to deliver one Megabyte of wireless data will fall from several U.S. dollars with 2G technologies to approximately US$.02 with 3G CDMA technologies, enabling the economic provision of a broad range of new wireless services. The white paper is available on the QUALCOMM Web site at www.qualcomm.com.

The MSM5500 solution supports hybrid mode operation between CDMA2000 1X and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO systems, and offers backward compatibility with existing IS-95A/B systems. It also supports receive diversity in the 1xEV-DO mode to increase data throughput. The MSM5500 solution supports the full feature set of QCT's MSM5100(TM) chipset, including Bluetooth(TM) connectivity capabilities, gpsOne(TM) and SnapTrack(TM) position location functionality, and multimedia features such as Qtunes(TM) MP3 player software and Compact Media Extension (CMX(TM)) MIDI-based multimedia software. The MSM5500 solution is available in 208- and 320-pin packages. The CSM5500 solution, a pin- and package-compatible replacement for existing High Data Rate (HDR) trial systems, has been end-to-end tested against the MSM5500 modem and offers substantial cost and power savings over the trial solutions. Each CSM5500 device can operate in one of three modes: modulator, demodulator or turbo decoder. The CSM5500 modulator can support up to three sectors on the forward link. Each CSM5500 demodulator can support 24 channel elements on the reverse link. A single CSM5500 turbo decoder can support the decoding needs across all three sectors. The CSM5500 solution is available in a BGA560(TM) package.
