Motorola spreads its infection in China -

Motorola Receives $34.8 Million Order From China
Unicom; Motorola Is the Largest CDMA Network
Provider to China Unicom

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Oct. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola's (NYSE: MOT - news) Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) announced today that it has been awarded another $34.8 million contract by China United Communications Corporation (China Unicom) to expand the operator's 800 Megahertz Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) network in China's Hebei Province.

The signing of the contract ranks Motorola as the No. 1 supplier to China Unicom's nationwide CDMA project. In May 2001, Motorola was awarded $407 million in CDMA contracts with China Unicom in 11 provinces, including the capital of Beijing. The current expansion supplements earlier contracts. With this expansion, the total capacity of Motorola-supplied CDMA network in China will be more than 4.4 million subscribers.

Under the terms of this recent contract, Motorola's GTSS will deliver its leading CDMA solution to China Unicom including SC4812T(TM) base stations, base station controllers and mobile switching centers. The expansion project, scheduled to be completed by the end of this year, will be carried out in four cities in Hebei Province-Handan, Cangzhou, Hengshui and Xingtai.

``Motorola is very proud to be the largest CDMA supplier to China Unicom. This contract award further reflects the strengths of Motorola's global leadership in CDMA networks as well as our local capabilities and customer relationships in China,'' said Ruey Bin Kao, Motorola vice president and general manager of the China Telecom Carrier Solutions Group. ``We want to thank Unicom for their continuous trust in our products and services and will work closely with them to provide integrated communications solutions to help their present and future telecom equipment needs,'' said Kao.

In addition to its success in the cellular infrastructure field, Motorola was also granted by China's Ministry of Information Industry the CDMA handset manufacture license for China market in August. Motorola is the only foreign company of 19 suppliers to receive the license. Last month, Motorola signed a supply agreement with China Unicom to provide 2 million CDMA handsets for its initial CDMA market.

China Unicom, the China mainland's second largest telecom operator, is deploying a nationwide CDMA network capable of supporting a subscriber capacity of 15 million users this year and plans to expand it 60 million subscribers by 2005. The China wireless market is one of the largest in the world with existing capacity of 120.6 million lines by the end of July. With the deployment of CDMA, China Unicom is well positioned for rapid expansion of its wireless service in the fastest growing mobility market in the world.
