Thanks for the thoughtful response.

One more question: What do you make of the apparent US decision to back the Northern Alliance in a march to Kabul? The US presumably will allow the Alliance to become the dominant force in post-Taliban Afghanistan. If so, Pakistan will be adversely affected as my understanding is that the current Pakistani government considers the NA an anathema.

Could the US backing of the NA be an error in the long run? It seems so.
