Pea:
Your premise is FALSE and that is where you go astray. You assume pro forma numbers are prima facie false and misleading. This is simply untrue. In fact, there are numerous very good arguments for why it makes much more sense to see more than *just* a GAAP presentation. What you consider 'misleading' may in fact be very illuminating to someone else.

Look, let's say there where 5 ways to present financials (by the way there could be hundreds if you are at all inventive). As long as GAAP, which has a long rich history of rule building, continues to be required why do you insist on making Big Brother PROSECUTE every company that simply would like to present *additional* ways of seeing their numbers??? Great idea, Pea, add more red tape to our gov't watchdogs, they are doing such a fine job already with their minimal resources.

You assume all the public are morons and that companies need to be handcuffed in what they can say, even if there is a mandated standard that ANYONE can use as a starting point and ending point if they'd like!). You and your ilk are the reason companies need a long legal paragraph of text disclaiming the world at the end of every press release.

This is the world you want to regulate MORE???

In a near perfect world we should all want a regulated standard and all the additional information we can get whenever possible. Oh wait, that IS the world we live in only you are in the dark ages and refuse to allow companies to be able to 'speak' freely above and beyond required disclosures. That's ridiculous.
