Are you familiar with the history of cargo cults? During and after World War II, throughout Melanesia, people wanted the material goodies that the Americans and Australians had. They figured that the gods brought them and the way to get the gods to bring the goods to the indigenous people was to imitate what the Americans and Australians did - so they built imitation runways complete with imitation airplanes and imitation warehouses and so forth in order to encourage the gods to send the goodies to themselves.

I think if the Jews rebuild the Temple without divine assistance and inspiration, nothing will come of it but a nice place to worship a God who remains remote and doesn't provide the goodies they are hoping for.
