I know what you mean - some people do bring up something about themselves very fast and not necessarily in context, or force the conversation round to their particular activism. I've rarely heard it from someone claiming to be gay - I've had it from some very out Christians <w>, and a few radical (by my standards!) lefties. Quite often it's helpful, because then you know these aren't people you want to spend time with... I'm not sure if that's their intention, of course <g>
I suppose if it's something maligned it does take a certain courage. But the people who'll appreciate the courage are the ones (like me, I hope) who wouldn't care anyway. Too often I've found it seems to be the prelude to a 'sermon' of some kind about their particular minority interest... OK, OK, I sympathise. Now go preach at someone else.
The nearest equivalent I've seen in bars is horoscopes - a lot in the US, actually, some women would virtually introduce themselves as "Hi, I'm Sarah, I'm a Leo". To which I'd generally have to force down a retort such as "Well, nobody's perfect", "Is it curable?" or worse...
