Thanks for posting that piece, FaultLine.

The political situation is devilishly complicated.

India may be upset with the US for forging a closer link to Pakistan. The US' most promising Afghani friend, the NA, is a Pakistani enemy. We help the NA and we upset the Pakistanis.

The Saudis are being subjected to unusually difficult domestic pressures so our relationship with them is presently strained.

A promising spot is Arafat. He is not condemning us, for once. He has taken a very big gamble, backed with his life, by supporting the US in the present conflict.

Who would have ever thought that Arafat, of all people, would support us under any circumstances?

The East is indeed a strange place. Makes the pre-WWI Balkans look simple by comparison.
