tchotkes? What is that? They are my lifeline to the world and the only people I see beyond the girls who work the counter of the little store/gas station where I go to stock up on canned spagetti and cigs. (okay, there's the people at the beer store, too) They are funny and full of stories and durn hard workers. Now that you mention it, I started loosening up with them more and hanging out and chatting more after one of them casually worked her way around to talking about one of the handful of lesbians that live in a town up the road, who she went to high school with. She just pattered on about this and that, making it part of the talk. The "fact" came out by way of talking about softball and how this friend of hers on the team was shunned by the others on an out-of-town trip because she was... gasp... a lesbian. No one would stay in a room with her. So the cleaner spit at them and said she would. Ya don't mess with them women from Chigger Mountain. And now it doesn't ever come up, since why would it? But she keeps me abreast of the woman's love life. I get lots of good gossip from them.
