NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- Shares of semiconductor equipment makers traded lower in evening action Monday after Novellus Systems posted in-line quarterly results but had cautious words for investors.

"Economic uncertainty and depressed demand in the end electronic products market continue to negatively impact our customers' capital spending programs," Novellus CEO Richard Hill said in a company statement. Hill also said in a conference call that third-quarter bookings came in at $124 million, below its worst-case scenario.

Shares of Novellus traded down 2.5 percent as the most active issue on the Island ECN, while shares of Applied Materials (AMAT: news, chart, profile) edged 2.5 percent lower and KLA-Tencor (KLAC: news, chart, profile) declined 1.4 percent.
