Your original post can be pretty much summed up by one sentence from it - "I'm beginning to think that those who have given considerable thought to religious issues and have concluded that they are agnostic or atheist are often far more respectful of the rights of others than the religious among us."

I replied that people who are religious that have given serious though to religious issues where also likely to be more tolerant.

You replied - "I hear you, but we disagree. "

I asked if you disagreed with my contention and rephrased it slightly.

You now reply - "This is beginning to diverge from my original point. Go back to it, please. I stand by it."

Perhaps it is diverging from your original post but no more then my first reply was, and it was examining a closely related idea. Perhaps you took from my post the idea that thoughtful religious people are as tolerant as thoughtful atheists or agnostics and then replied that you disagree. I didn't actually say that, but on examine the idea I do think it is pretty much true. I have seen intolerance from atheists, just as I have seen religious people who are intolerant of atheism.

I can perhaps agree with the idea that agnostics are overall most likely to be tolerant. If you are not claiming to know the answers why be intolerant of other people's answers. However I don't see atheists as being any more tolerant then theists or deists.

All of this seems relevant to your original point. Although not perhaps in total agreement with it. If you drop the word "atheist" from your original statement and focused on agnostics only I think we would be in agreement.

Tim

Edit - But to add a different point I think our main concern should be the individuals rather then the categories. If we see obnoxious or unjust intolerance then we should speak against it no matter where it comes from.
