Race, ethnicity, sexuality ought to have nothing to do with the measuring of one's character. There might be day when it requires no special effort to succeed at being human while being black or gay or whatever. But while that day awaits, those that succeed in the face of ignorant prejudice and oppression deserve a special admiration.
I think that was Poet's point.
