One thing:

You mention utilitarianism. That's an absolutist ethics. The ethical absolutist is looking for the one rule that he or she holds inviolable and that substands all ethics. For the utilitarian it's the belief that whatever we do we must do in a way that either maximizes general well-being or minimizes suffering in the world for the reasonably predictable long term. That's the absolute; true no matter what. that's the only absolute rule you need to know. Everything else is a matter of context and consequence. So you can lie to the Gestapo about the Jews in your attic; you can steal bread for your children and even break promises from time to time. It depends. It's relative to the circumstances and consequences while the soul of morality (even if that soul is not captured by utilitarianism) remains steadfast.
