There is no question that India has made enormous advances after abandoning the socialist misadventures of the Nehru family reign. But India's wealth is spread dramatically unevenly around the country. In Bihar, for example, 75 per cent of the women are illiterate. The life expectancy of a woman in Uttar Pradesh is 20 years shorter than a woman in Kerala and so on.

Some 30 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line, which I believe is defined as having sufficient calories to sustain life.
