SK Telecom opens integrated Net service Nate SK Telecom, the country's largest mobile carrier, yesterday unveiled a new fixed-and-wireless Internet service called "Nate," intensifying competition in next-generation multimedia Internet services.
Nate (www.nate.com) incorporates a variety of gadgets including personal computers, mobile phones, PDA (personal digital assistant) and VMT (vehicle mounted terminal), allowing users to go online "anytime, anywhere," SK Telecom said.
The company said Nate.com will function as a PC portal, while its wireless Internet portal n.TOP will be upgraded to Nate. And Nate for PDA and VMT will be introduced Nov. 1, completing the online-and-offline service network.
"Fixed-line Internet service is struggling with limited profit models and wireless Internet service is chained to a small display panel. Nate combines the advantages of both services, offering a new business model," SK Telecom said.
It said the new service will set a trend through which subscribers can enjoy next-generation Internet service, going beyond the limitations of handset devices and geography.
SK Telecom said it will enter overseas markets with its cutting edge technology related to Nate.
Nate has been coined from "new, next, net" and "gate, mate, date." Nate members will be allowed to enjoy not only normal Internet portal service but also wireless, PDA and e-mail transmissions. And users can change bell sounds, background screens and game contents through their PCs, while sending 50 free short messages per month.
SK Telecom said it plans to create synergist effects with other SK affiliated portals including n.TOP, i-Touch, Netsgo, OKCashbag.com. A subsidiary in charge of Nate.com is also scheduled to be released later this year, SK Telecom said.
