New system to provide hand-free communication in vehicles

.c Kyodo News Service

TOKYO, Oct. 16 (Kyodo) - Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp. (NTT) and Honda Motor Co. said Tuesday they have developed a new communication system for vehicles allowing drivers to exchange e-mail and make telephone calls without using their hands.

The companies said they plan to introduce the system, developed jointly by NTT and Honda R&D Co., commercially as early as 2002.

The system will be linked to the third-generation mobile phone service called FOMA -- short for Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access -- which NTT's mobile arm NTT DoCoMo Inc. launched Oct. 1.

FOMA enables the downloading of video images and high-speed Internet access six to 40 times faster than that currently available with DoCoMo's existing Internet-capable i-mode handsets. FOMA also allows subscribers to use packet data communication, short message, voice mail, call-forwarding and call-waiting services.

With FOMA, the new vehicle communication system will, for example, enable a driver to read and reply vocally to e-mail without taking his or her hands off the steering wheel, the two companies said.

Communications will be halted automatically when the vehicle comes to a corner to help prevent the driver from becoming distracted.

The system will also provide information about restaurants and shops in the area the driver is going through, they said.
