I'd say there's a rather glaring contradiction here, historical choices notwithstanding: never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. ... never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy. I suppose it depends how you weight the 'apparently'... but I'd say yielding to overwhelming enemy might shows remarkably good sense <g> More problematically, of course, the Taliban would no doubt read the same quote with pleasure - as from their stance, they're acting with honour in the face of just such apparently overwhelming force...
