I agree that a direct radioactive release would be doubtful (though possible), but the bigger danger is damage to the cooling system, which could cause the fuel rods to overheat, and the resulting steam could release radioactivity into the air. However, I agree that this is not as large of a threat as some fear. The Israelis took out the Iraqui reactor back in the 70s, damaging the core, without much of a release. It is still prudent, though, to protect our nuclear power plants as much as possible, maybe even install some anti-aircraft terminal defenses around the perimeter (easier said than done).
