Although I am not an engineer (actually a senior bioinformatics and research scientist in a big pharma) as you, I do understand a little about the internet infrastructure issue. I agree that fiber optics is the future in the long run. However, the supply out there is overwhelming and it will take a while before the tel companies consume all the current available FO layout.

The other big question facing these telecom companies is how they are able to pay off their debts. Just do a simple math, and come out with the number of years that will take WCOM to pay off its debts. Sure VC and the public can throw more $$$ into them down the road. But they have to be comfortable with the facts that lots of these companies will not be able to pay off their debts in the next 40-50 years, or even longer. Are you willing to invest in these issues? For me, the answer is simple: no.
