U have to bear in mind that Berkeley is a weird place. A few years ago there was some guy going to classes naked to prove some sort of point. I generally like the attitudes there, but if the flag story is true I think they have gone off the deep end.

Nevertheless, as an American I support the right of people to express contrary viewpoints, and I cannot agree with the author's invitation to the people with those viewpoints to leave. The author apparantly is a bigot as well, as evidenced by his "English-language-only" mentality. We speak whatever languages we wish to speak. It just happens that English is more commonly spoken here now -- this may not always be the case. America is a work in progress; a work of art; a work of freedom. The language we speak has nothing to do with anything.

The author believes that Christian men and women founded this nation -- and many did. But many, such as Jefferson, were deists. Our constitution clearly separates church and state. For the author to suggest that the government's actions should be based on religious beliefs is un-American.

These are special times and our natural patriotism is showing through while we come together as a nation. This is the only silver lining I can find in the dark cloud of September 11. However, this is not an excuse for people to become exclusionary and force their practices of such things as religion and language on others.
