I did read what you wrote but, given the time, I can by no means guarantee my understanding. Still..

We do seem to agree that ethics is not a game of solitaire. Playing this game we must, by definition be dealing with and to other people whose interests we must consider in our deliberations. Get a bunch of people and then a bunch of cultures together and soon it's realized that the spirit of the game has a great deal to do with cooperation and compromise. Cooperation and compromise require the search for a common ground transcending our differences.

People have tried to explain ethics on a Darwinian model -- a form of ethical naturalism-- which is confused. Evolution happens in ethics but not by way of some sort of Darwinian process, because in this case we aren't dealing with the natural selection of RANDOM variations. Natural selection will, as you say, have the final say. But the traits selected in this case are intentional, not random constructs. We are reacting to are surroundings with a more or less conscious plan. Lamarck, therefore, provides us the better model and it makes a huge difference. It makes us responsible for our choices..
