I agree with most everything you say BUT you're a little off on the "Puff" thing. "Puff" as in Puff the Magic Dragon was a popular name for the AC-47 gunship used in RVN. Mostly a troops in contact thing. In flying circles, the aircraft was known as "spooky'. The AC-130 has been known since it's earliest wide-scale use (circa 1970) as "Spectre". I could tell you stories..... For basic info, type "AC-130" in Alta Vista or Raging Search or whatever they're calling it these days.
