The main question I'm asked by friends in England is if the USA has the balls to go ahead with a ground troop invasion and the casualties that will follow.

Well, also from England <g> I'd think so. It's a far less ambiguous cause, and there's far more outrage and passion this time.
Plus it's not seen as so 'self-serving' in the way that the Gulf War was (i.e., protecting oil supplies, never mind the Kuwaitis themselves... how many really believed that Hussein wouldn't be there now if Kuwait had no oil).
And the actions in the Balkans IMO have got people more used to the idea that the West maybe can and should send troops in to enforce peace, and produce/support a government more in tune with its people and less protective (and productive) of extremists...

Not so much now, there's probably fewer who know the words than when you were young... (or even the tune outside those two lines) and it is being seen as on the jingoistic side of patriotic. Also, you'd rarely find a Celt who'd sing it <w>
The popular choice now as a (specifically English) anthem would probably be Jerusalem... wonderful tune, too.
