Israel is America's only true friend in the Middle East. They are also an awesome military power. Enemies of the US would love to see the strong US/Israel relationship weakened.

Why?

With Israel, the US has a military base, it can use, right in the middle of the untrustworthy Arab dictatorships. If this war spreads, and the Arab nations take sides against the civilized world, the sanddiggers will be on the run, quickly, as they have always done before.
