When I was home for Christmas break my junior year (third year undergraduate), I went out with a friend who also lived in Washington. She said something about how she had not read anything since vacation (we had been home a week), and I replied that I had not either. Suddenly, I stopped, realizing that I was inadvertently telling a falsehood. In fact, I had read 9 books during the week, from science fiction tales to Turgenev's "Fathers and Sons", from a biography of Marlon Brando to a book on American politics by Theodore White. But compared to my usual reading, it was easy, breezy, and felt like I had done little. To me, it was unwinding......
